The foolish spend their time worrying
ਤੇ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰੇਂਦੇ ਸਾਦ
te ja਼ikara kareMde sAda
While the saintly spend theirs in Divine remembrance
ਉੱਠ ਫ਼ਕੀਰਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰ
uTTha pha਼kIrA ja਼ikara kara
Rise, O [Faqir: a wandering Sufi ascetic or spiritual seeker], and meditate
ਤੇਰਾ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਆਦ
terA pha਼ikara karegA Ada
The Primal Divine will then take care of your worries
ਉਹੀ ਖੇਸੀ ਉਹੀ ਚੋਲਾ
uhI khesI uhI cholA
With that same [Khes: traditional thick checkered cotton blanket/shawl] and that same robe
ਕਈਆਂ ਦਾ ਰੱਬ ਕਈਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੌਲਾ
kaIAM dA rabba kaIAM dA maulA
To some He is God, to others He is [Maula: Master/Lord, often used in a Sufi context]

To many He is the Master
ਉਹੀ ਫਿਰਨੀ ਤੇ ਫ਼ੇਰਾ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਆ

He still wanders through the same villages today
ਬੈਠਾ ਖੂਹੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਆ
baiThA khUhI te pANI lAuMdA A
He sits by the well, tending to the water
ਬਾਣੀ ਚੋਂ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਆ
bANI choM rAga suNAuMdA A
He makes the melodies of the [Bani: sacred Gurbani compositions] resonate

I am lowly while my [Murshad: spiritual guide/teacher] is supreme; I’ve befriended the High One

With an arrogant mind and harsh words, remember, your turn to answer will come too

ਨਾਲ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਲੰਗਰ ਛਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਆ
nAla baiTha ke laMgara ChakAuMdA A
He sits beside them to partake in [Langar: the community kitchen serving free meals to all regardless of status]
ਨਾਲੇ ਹੱਸਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਆ
nAle hassadA nAle hasAuMdA A
He laughs and spreads joy to others as well

He taught that the entire human race is but one caste and promoted honest labor
ਭੁੱਖੇ ਢਿੱਡ ਨਾ ਸੋਵੇ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਇੰਝ ਰੀਤ ਚਲਾਈ ਸੀ

He started a tradition so that no one would ever go to sleep on an empty stomach
ਭੁੱਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਆ

He embraces those who have lost their way
ਹੱਥ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਤਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਆ
hattha pha.Da ke nAla tarAuMdA A
Holding their hands, He helps them cross the worldly ocean
ਸਭ ਦੇ ਸੁੱਤੇ ਭਾਗ ਜਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਆ
sabha de sutte bhAga jagAuMdA A
He awakens the sleeping destinies of all
